To the person who's thinking of buying a cheap car for a year. I did down in Costa Rica and it was great. I would split it with a friend or two, though, if you can. Makes it cheaper and you'll want to travel with friends a lot too. -Casey

My friend, Sam, spent a month in Morocco about a year ago and particularly loved one coastal town, but I don't remember the name. Don't know if he got into the Atlas Mountains. Will get him to respond to you in the next day or so. He was crazy about Morocco.

i'm with some friends in Morocco for a month or so this year. anyone know if it's worth it and/or dangerous to rent a car to drive through the atlas mountains? also what are some fun cities to visit other than Marrakesh and Casablanca.

Hey, just wondering if anyone has tried buying a cheap used car while they are abroad. I'm in CR for a year and I need a car a lot of the time to get my board around and stuff, but I don't want to get stuck with it when I need to go home. Has anyone bought one and had problems?

Check out the article posted on Gappenings on October 13th about the top ten ways to meet friends while on a gap year. Some pretty sweet tips.

What about a reality show about a gap year? It could be like Laguna Beach or that MTV show where they take the sweet 16 kids and leave them on farms or whatever. Take a group of kids (maybe some spoiled ones for fun) and follow them through their gap year . Travel, volunteer work, danger, lots of drama. Could be pretty sick.

I thought this page was the place where people were supposed to interact, almost like a blog? Anyone on a gap year who wants to comment?

Hey - it looks as if Princeton's announcement has fired people up a lot, but some of the students at PU are not 100% enthusiastic. They point out that the requirement for volunteer work (if you want University support) may make it tough for some to take advantage of the program to do a gap year. Either the area they might want to visit will not lend itself to volunteer work, either because of lack of availability or governmental restriction, or the timing just doesn't work. Interesting quibble, but PU should still be able to generate some meaningful increase in gapping vs historical experience. Wonder how the UK markt developed? Don't think there was governmental or institutional support, which may explain why it is considered more of an upper class privilege in Britain. Thoughts? - Brian69

If the economy keeps going the way it is, gap years will become the exclusive domain of the privileged. the next thing then will be scholarship programs designed to open gaps for those who cannot pay. But, if that happens, will they even want to delay graduation for such an opportunity?

So, the question is: which is better for later life, a gap year spent in an academic setting or one spent in something entirely different? Is it better to have more credits and subjects you wouldn't have time to study otherwise or to do volunteer work on an organic farm or among needy people somewhere?
